Case study

Waves is a temporary project to support artists and to show art in public space in a period of isolation due to the coronavirus. It is an initiative of Julia Mullié and Nick Terra that started during the first lockdown in the Netherlands in April 2020 in Amsterdam. Artists were invited to design a flag produced in an edition of 4 + 1 AP.

Subsequently, new editions of Waves were established in various cities to which artists from the local scene were invited. Waves São Paulo was founded by gallerist Jaqueline Martins; Waves Bogotá by gallerist Jaime Martinez from FORO.SPACE, Daniela Cortes and collector Juan Diego Arango; Waves Chicago by Stephanie Cristello, founder of Chicago Manual Style and THE SEEN, in collaboration with independent curator and writer Ruslana Lichtzier; Waves Lisbon was founded by ZBD publisher Luiza Texeira de Freitas and Natxo Checa; Waves New Delhi was founded by curator Vidisha Aggarwal from Nature Morte.

From 30 April until 30 July collector Siska Bulkens and curator Louis-Philippe Van Eeckhoutte brought Waves to Belgium where the flags could be seen at eight non-profits, namely Netwerk Aalst, Kunsthal Gent, Be-Part Waregem, AAIR Antwerp, CC Strombeek Grimbergen, KIOSK Ghent, La Loge Brussels and CIAP Genk.
